Learning to Live Delightfully

A FOURTEEN-WEEK FORMATION COURSE
FOR CHARLOTTE MASON MOTHERS
LEARNING
TO LIVE
Miss Mason asked me for what purpose I had come. I replied: “I have come to learn to teach." Then Miss Mason said, "My dear, you have come here to learn to live.”

You love Charlotte Mason’s vision, but somewhere along the way it became something to measure up to rather than a way to live. Your faith, your home, your teaching — all of them are good and beloved — yet you are not experiencing the rest you long for.
The tension you feel is not due to failure. It is due to something far more subtle and far more common than you might think. Somewhere between the vision that drew you to Charlotte Mason and the reality of your ordinary daily life, a quiet gap opened. And because of that gap, without meaning to, you began measuring yourself against an image of the life you had imagined rather than resting in the life God has given you. It is not a personal character flaw; it is a deeply human one. And it has a name and, more importantly, a cure.
Learning to Live is a fourteen-week formation course that addresses the source of the strain: it is not your methods, but your loves. Drawing on Charlotte Mason’s philosophy, the Christian concept of Ordo Amoris, and the attentive work of beholding Christ, it forms a mother’s interior life. It doesn't ask her to do it on her own, but invites her to cooperate with the Holy Spirit, the true Educator, who forms from within what no course, curriculum, or resolution can produce from without.
Each week spreads a feast before you — picture study, poetry, nature, living books, habit formation, Lectio Divina, and much more — some of the same practices Charlotte Mason gave her students at Scale How. Slowly, through beholding and becoming, a mother’s attention is retrained away from comparison and ideal-driven striving towards the beauty of Christ. And none of it is done alone, but in community.
“We warm ourselves at each other’s fires, and glow with the heat we get.” — Charlotte Mason
A mother's inner formation is never only for herself; it always overflows into the atmosphere of her home, and that atmosphere shapes her children, and what shapes her children shapes the generation.
By the end of this course, you will have entered a sturdier, more peaceful way of living and planted the seeds that will bear much fruit.
"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me — practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you."
— Philippians 4:8-9
